Get to Know Your Customers: New Hampshire Program Manager

NEW HAMPSHIRE VINE PROGRAM MANAGER DAVE BERRY

“Get to Know Your Customers Day” is observed on the third Thursday of each quarter. Appriss would like to take this opportunity to learn a little bit more about our customers, and to spotlight just how wonderful they are.

Appriss’ flagship solution, VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) is the nation’s leading automated victim notification system. Through VINE, victims and concerned citizens can register and be notified when an offender is released from custody. VINE is used across 48 states, providing millions of Americans the peace of mind they deserve.

In each state, there is at least one designated VINE Program Manager. The Program Manager is typically an employee of the entity or agency that holds the VINE contract in that location, and serves as the liaison between Appriss and their community. They are the main point of contact for all VINE-related questions, concerns, or needs that citizens may have, and are responsible for ensuring their community is knowledgeable about the VINE services available to them.

Program Managers are imperative to the success of VINE, as they provide Appriss invaluable feedback and suggestions from the field so we can be confident the service offers a streamlined, user-friendly experience and continues to be a trusted safety net for victims.

Our VINE Program Manager in the State of New Hampshire is Mr. David Berry Jr. In addition to working in corrections for nearly 30 years, Dave also recently was awarded the Visionary Voice Award from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC). We were excited to get to know Dave a little better…

Name:  Dave Berry

State/Title: Superintendent Sullivan County Department of Corrections

IMG_0745-1What drew you to your role as Program Manager? Emily Staples-Kamer did a presentation for the NH Association of Counties Superintendent's Affiliate.  The presentation was incredible and we decided as an affiliate that if there was ever an opportunity to bring VINE into NH we would support it as a group.  A year later Emily called me and informed me that the NH Attorney General's Office had posted a grant.  I had 33 hours to get it done.  With Emily doing a ton of the work we got the grant in on time and were awarded the funding.  In case you all don't know it, Emily is the best!

What keeps you here? I am still here because the grant fell on my shoulders.  I am retiring on February 26 next year and I am hoping the state finds a way to keep me in the position. It's been the most rewarding thing that I have participated in during my 27 years in corrections.

What is the best part of your job? Knowing that victims feel empowered by the services of VINE.  It give me peace of mind knowing folks are safe.

What does VINE mean to your state? VINE has improved communication between DOC's, Police and Crisis Centers. I finally know what the crisis centers do and I feel they are aware of how we function in the DOC.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Laconia New Hampshire and went to prep school in Maine.

What are your hobbies? Mixed Martial Arts. I have been studying since April 15, 1970 with Instructor certifications or black belts in Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun and Savate  I have also studies Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Rio. I am NH's only fighter to make it into the UFC.

Where is your favorite place to travel? Turks and Caicos is my favorite place on earth.

What is your dream vacation? My dream vacation would be to travel to Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

What is your favorite food? Maine lobsters.

Favorite sports team? New England Patriots (Six-time Super Bowl champions!)

Favorite color? Blue

Favorite holiday? My daughter's birthday (I know it's not a holiday but I am amazed that someone like myself who is so average could be the father of someone so perfect). If I have to pick a national holiday I would say Memorial Day.  It makes me remember people who should be remembered.

What books are you reading right now? Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It by Kamal Ravikant. Everyone needs to read this book.

What TV shows are you watching? I don't watch television often. Right now, I am listening to the Under the Skin podcast by Russell Brand.

IMG_1718-1Do you have any pets? Two cats, a Maine Coon Cat and a rescue Calico cat named Harley.

Favorite quote? "Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.  -Bruce Lee

What is interesting about you that most people don’t know? I worked for Elite Models in NYC. For a two-year stint, I was in every Gillette shaving commercial and print add as well as other commercial and print ads including GQ and Esquire. I later worked for Madison Avenue Modeling and once worked with a young Johnny Depp. I had the opportunity to work with Paulina Porizkova, Tyra Banks, Carol Alt and Jennifer Flavin. Now I am old!

That wraps it up for this quarter’s “Get to Know Your Customers Day” spotlight! Thanks to Dave Berry for helping us get to know you better and showing what makes him such an outstanding VINE partner in New Hampshire.
